Why is my Violet Cory darting to the surface?

This is completely normal behaviour. Corydoras have a modified intestine that allows them to breathe atmospheric air. They will occasionally dart to the surface to take a gulp of air and swim rapidly back down. However, if they are doing this constantly, it may indicate low oxygen levels or poor water quality in the tank.

Can I keep Violet Corys on gravel?

It is highly recommended not to. Coarse or sharp gravel will wear down their delicate barbels as they dig for food, which causes pain, stops them from foraging properly, and frequently leads to fatal bacterial infections. Fine aquarium sand is the only suitable substrate for them.

How many Violet Corys should I keep together?

You should keep an absolute minimum of six Violet Corys together, though a larger group of 8 to 12 is even better. They are highly social shoaling fish that will become incredibly stressed and withdrawn if kept alone or in too small a group.

Will Violet Corys clean the algae in my tank?

No. While they are fantastic scavengers that will clean up uneaten fish food from the bottom of the tank, they do not eat algae. You will need a dedicated algae-eating species, like Otocinclus, for that purpose.

What is the difference between Corydoras similis and Corydoras ourastigma?

They look very similar, but C. ourastigma has a distinctly longer, more pointed snout. Furthermore, the dark spot on C. ourastigma is usually more defined, whereas C. similis has a smooth, gradual transition of small spots merging into the dark smudge on the tail base.
