Why is my Vlamingi Tang turning dark in colour?

This tang has the remarkable ability to change its colour depending on its mood. Flashing dark can indicate stress, a response to a perceived threat, or simple relaxation while being serviced by a cleaner wrasse.

How fast do Vlamingi Tangs grow?

They grow exceptionally fast. A small juvenile can easily grow to over 25 cm within its first two years, eventually reaching up to 60 cm. You must have a massive tank ready for their rapid development.

Will my Vlamingi Tang grow a horn?

No. Despite being part of the unicornfish genus (Naso), the Vlamingi Tang develops a rounded, prominent bump on its snout as it matures, rather than the sharp, protruding horn seen in species like the Bluespine Unicornfish.

Can I keep a Vlamingi Tang in a 400-litre aquarium?

Absolutely not. While a tiny juvenile might survive temporarily, they require a bare minimum of 1,500 litres as adults. Keeping them in smaller tanks will stunt their growth, cause immense stress, and lead to disease.

The Vlamingi Tang, often sold as a drab juvenile, transforms into one of the most magnificent centrepieces in the marine hobby. As they mature, they develop striking blue lines, vertical spots, and dramatic trailing filaments on their tail. However, they are also one of the largest tangs available, easily reaching up to 60 cm in length. Their sheer bulk and insatiable need for open swimming space make them suitable only for the largest of private aquariums or public displays.
