Do I really need a deep sand bed for a Jawfish?

Yes. A substrate depth of at least 10 cm, featuring a mix of fine sand and coarser rubble, is essential for their physical and psychological wellbeing. Without it, they cannot build a burrow and will remain constantly stressed.

Why is my jawfish spitting sand onto my corals?

Jawfish are constant excavators. They maintain their burrows by scooping up mouthfuls of sand and spitting it out nearby. If a coral is placed too close to their burrow, it may become an accidental dumping ground.

Can I keep more than one Yellowhead Jawfish together?

Yes, provided the aquarium is large enough with sufficient floor space (at least 120 cm in length for a group). In smaller tanks, they will aggressively dispute territory. Introducing a bonded pair is usually the safest approach.

Will they eat my ornamental shrimp?

Generally, no. Yellowhead Jawfish are planktivores and possess relatively small mouths. While they might opportunistically snap at newly hatched shrimp fry, adult cleaner or peppermint shrimp are entirely safe.
